It’s called Stone Thrown Pizza on Center Point Road. Here’s the deal, I saw a post on social media of them making their own sauce– FROM FRESH TOMATOES! This perked up my Italian sensibilities because I’ve never seen a pizza place do anything but pour sauce out of a can. They also have a stone surface inside a gas-fired wood-stove-like oven; checking all the boxes for me.
So, this week CC, Ned and myself cruised down the road for lunch. It was fairly packed for 11:45 a.m., the service was incredibly friendly and accomodating and super clean too. I ordered my pizza, the only way to judge pizza — Plain. Just the dough, sauce and cheese. With a good pizza this is all you need, everything else just gets in the way and ruins the flavor profile of a good ZA.
The pizza came quick thanks to a scorching hot oven. On first bite I knew it was great! The cheese was stretchy, didn’t pull-off the crust in a mouth scorching napalm-like ball, and had a high-quality buttery taste. It’s almost like they let it rest for the perfect amount of time before service so your first bite was a perfect one!. Coming from a place where pizza is cooked in coal and wood-fired ovens on the regular, I appreciate those little burnt patches of extreme flavor on the crust which add a texture and flavor to the dough. And the dough was perfectly thin and not sweet which is my huge turn-off for the big pizza chains. The dough should taste like the best piece of fresh made bread that it is, not a sweet treat.
So, Stone Thrown Pizza in Cedar rapids is authentic, tasty, and locally owned and deserves the respect of anyone who really loves good pizza. I’ll give it an 8.9!
