College Square & Crossroads Mall Aiming to Revitalize as 'Cultural Epicenters'

By Tim Martin Mar 2, 2021 | 1:03 PM

Interesting.

If you head into either College Square Mall or Crossroads Mall in the Cedar Valley….it…umm…leaves something to desire. A few cool stores here and there, and then a plethora of empty store fronts. I’m sure at one time, these 2 malls were the PLACE to be…hell even I remember spending my weekends at the mall in the early 2k’s, but times have changed as more and more people go digital with shopping or head to outdoor strip malls. Mind you, there are still some great working malls out there like Coral Ridge in Coralville, but even that’s a hike for me from Waterloo.

So how do you bring people back to the mall? Rethink the clientele, and it looks like that’s what Crossroads and College Square are giving a shot.

From the Facebook posts, both malls are looking convert the mall to a more ‘Cultural Epicenter,’ where international foods, beer & wine gardens, coffee houses, and drinking establishments are a plenty…check out the post below.

In the middle of it all will be a community park interior filled with tables, trees, musicians, artists…ALL DAY and everyday.

So the way I picture this at least in my brain? Is a small city located INSIDE a mall.

Huh…I truthfully think this is a unique idea…will it work though? Will you want to head to one of these locations and see what there is to offer? I’d love to see it in full working order, but we’ll have to wait and see.
