Waterloo police shot and wounded a would-be armed robber at the Kwik Star convenience store at 707 Broadway Street Kwik Star Sunday afternoon.
No one else was injured and the suspect was arrested and taken to the hospital.
Authorities say it was shortly after 2:45 p.m. when the gunman entered the store and ordered everyone else out. Police arrived and surrounded the Kwik Star with the suspect still inside.
A short time later, he came out, firing his gun. One of the bullets shattered a window at a thrift store across the street. Police returned fire and at least one shot hit the gunman.
As is Waterloo police department policy in an officer-involved shooting, the investigation was turned over to an outside agency, in this case the state Division of Criminal Investigation.
The DCI has not yet released the suspect’s name, nor the weapon he used. They did say his injury was not life-threatening.
