Hy-Vee & Target Store Adding More Self Check-Out Lanes

By Tim Martin Oct 16, 2020 | 12:51 PM

So what do you prefer when shopping?

Self check out lanes, more and more of them are popping up at your local Hy-Vee and Target stores in Eastern Iowa. According to a Gazette articleA customer at the Collins Road NE Hy-Vee near Lindale Mall trying to find a cashier may have to look a little harder than just a year ago. Nearly a dozen sleek, new self-checkout systems line the front of the store. That leaves the venue with four traditional checkout lines operated by cashiers and two smaller express lanes that also require an employee to run them.

Self-checkouts now outnumber staffed registers at many stores. How do you feel about using self-checkout stations? Do you like them or prefer to have a real person check you out?

Even in the Cedar Valley, the Hy-Vee on University Ave has added self check-outs which admittedly are super convenient for quick shopping trips. Also if you head to the Super Target on San Marnan in Waterloo? There are a TON of empty checkout lanes, with a few self service ones. Admittedly, I usually head for the self service UNLESS I have a big shopping cart full of stuff.

While convenience is a good thing, I fear for the jobs potentially lost from it. Also…EVERY….SINGLE…TIME….I seemingly have the guy that is just discovering this new technology and then it holds up the line.

Honestly, I don’t think the classic human cashier is going anywhere, I think that’ll always be an option…but the more and more these thinks keep popping up…you’ll be bagging your own groceries.
